Let These Kardashian-Fave Makeup Artists Overhaul Your Fall Beauty Routine

You’ve switched over you closets, shaken out your sweaters and now you’re transitioning your skincare to a more hydrated regimen in preparation for the dry winter months. But what else can you do to make sure your beauty routine is as up to date as your boot collection? PEOPLE caught up with celebrity glam experts (and Kardashian fave makeup artists) Patrick Ta and Mary Phillips during La Mer’s Sheer Pressed Powder launch in Los Angeles, where they revealed some of their must-try autumn beauty looks (as well as how to prep your face for them).

First step: Moisturize. “The more moisturized the skin is, the better the foundation can lay onto your skin without looking cakey or heavy,” Ta explains.

Though daylight savings will soon hit and the clocks will “fall back,” that doesn’t necessarily mean those dark circles will follow suit.

“It’s always important to apply the eye cream because it helps with puffiness and any dark circles,” Ta, who favors La Mer’s ‘The Eye Concentrate,’ says. “It’s important that the under eyes are plump before you apply concealer so that the makeup under the eyes doesn’t crease. Nobody wants that.”

Now that you’re prepped, it’s time to talk fall beauty trends. Phillips reveals that after months of clients including Khloé Kardashian begging her to try a certain makeup look and her steadfastly refusing in return, she finally gave in – and now she can’t stop.

“One trend I never thought I would try on my clients that I didn’t love is that really warm, rich red eyeshadow,” she says. “It can definitely go wrong. One of my clients wanted to do something like that and I was like I don’t know; it really has to be done the right way, but it’s really beautiful when it’s done.”

“It was a trend I really did get into and, still now, I really love to use warm brown tones on the eye,” she says about how darker colors “can really change your eye color … The red will make brown eyes look green or green eyes look greener.”

Like Phillips, Ta is also having a moment with dressing his ladies up in red, but not just on the eyes. As a lipstick enthusiast, the man of the models (Karlie Kloss, Alessandra Ambrosio, Jasmine Sanders, Gigi Hadid and a slew of others) has been obsessing over one particular deep velvety red shade that he can’t stop “pairing with glowy skin” (he suggests La Mer’s ‘The Renewal Oil’).

“I’ve just been putting this dark lip color on everyone because I just love allowing skin to really shine through,” he says of the look he’s currently loving. “Whenever I play with a dark lip I always let the skin be fresh, natural and glowy, and then I just have the lips be the star of the show.”
