Celebrities React to Passing of Playboy Founder, Hugh Hefner

Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy Magazine died on Wednesday. The media mogul and icon was 91 years old. According to a statement from Playboy Enterprises, Hefner “peacefully passed away from natural causes in his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones.”

Hefner introduced Playboy to the world in 1953, and since then his name has become synonymous with the brand. The magazine, which everyone “just read for the articles” shot some celebrities to fame and featured many others on the cover. Celebrities from Jenna Dewan Tatum to Jamie Foxx flocked to Twitter and Instagram to share memories and condolences. It seems like everyone has a story to share.

Hugh will be laid to rest next to none other than Marilyn Monroe. According to TMZ, Hefner bought the crypt to the left of Monroe’s back in 1992. At the time, he said, “Spending an eternity next to Marilyn is too sweet to pass up.” Monroe, you may remember, was on the very first issue of Playboy.

In a statement to People, Hugh’s son and current Chief Creative Office of Playboy Enterprises, Cooper Hefner said, “My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom. He defined a lifestyle and ethos that lie at the heart of the Playboy brand, one of the most recognizable and enduring in history. He will be greatly missed by many, including his wife Crystal, my sister Christie and my brothers David and Marston, and all of us at Playboy Enterprises.”

We’re sending our condolences to his children and to his wife.
